There are more boutique hotel guides on the internet than anyone needs. Most of them are lists of the same twenty properties, written by people who have never set foot inside any of them.
We started The Boutique Hotel Edit because we believed something better was possible.
Between us we’ve spent two decades writing about hotels and travel for some of the world’s leading publications. We’ve stayed in hundreds of properties across the UK and Europe — the extraordinary ones, the disappointing ones, and the genuinely hidden gems that never seem to make anyone else’s list. That experience is the foundation of everything we publish.
Every hotel featured on this site has been assessed against a simple but uncompromising standard: would we recommend it to someone we care about? If the answer is anything less than yes, it doesn’t appear here. We don’t feature hotels because they have good PR. We don’t accept payment for editorial coverage. We write about places because they’re genuinely worth staying in.
What makes a boutique hotel worth your time and money is rarely the thread count or the minibar. It’s the feeling of arriving somewhere that has been thought about: where the building has a story, the rooms have character and the people running it actually care. Those are the places we look for. Those are the places we write about.
Our selection spans independent properties and small hotel groups across London, the UK and Europe, from design-led city stays to countryside retreats with serious kitchens. We cover a wide range of budgets, because exceptional character isn’t the exclusive preserve of expensive hotels.
We update our content regularly, revisit properties and remove hotels that no longer meet our standards. What you find here reflects where we would genuinely choose to stay.
