Astra Suites
Long-established Imerovigli caldera suites with warm service and a village-centre position
The hotel
Astra Suites has been part of Imerovigli’s caldera since the early 1990s, and the track record it has built over three decades is what most clearly sets it apart from newer openings at similar prices. Its whitewashed suites tumble down seven levels of cliff in the centre of the village, with a clifftop infinity pool, Five Senses restaurant and bar, and private pools or outdoor jetted tubs in the top categories. The caldera path to Fira and Oia is moments away. The reason people keep coming back is simple: it does what it says it will do.
The experience
Astra feels like a hotel that has been refined rather than redesigned. The traditional cave architecture and the caldera position are the permanent assets, and the service has been worked at over many seasons. Breakfast is a la carte and delivered to your suite at a time you choose. The infinity pool on the clifftop has bar service and is heated in spring and autumn. There is a massage room and a relaxation area with a jacuzzi and steam room, by appointment. Five Senses is good enough that you won’t feel obliged to go out every night. Expect lots of steps and no lift.
The rooms
Suites are classic Santorini cave style, with domed ceilings, white walls and tiles in sea-glass tones, and loft-style layouts in some categories. They run from Studios and Junior Suites through Senior Suites to the luxury tier: suites with indoor or outdoor jetted tubs, a Pool Suite, an Infinity Pool Suite and two private villas. Terraces are fairly open to view, so if privacy matters, the private pool and outdoor tub suites are worth the upgrade. Some smaller suites have loft bedrooms and showers in the bedroom.
Food and drink
Breakfast is complimentary, a la carte and brought to your suite at a time you choose. For lunch and dinner, Five Senses Restaurant and Bar serves Greek and Mediterranean dishes on a terrace with big sunset views, and it is open to non-residents, so book ahead in summer. The pool bar covers drinks through the day. Imerovigli’s other tavernas are a short stroll.
The neighbourhood
Imerovigli is the quietest of the caldera villages, and Astra’s central position means local restaurants and the caldera path to Fira and Oia are a short walk away. Skaros Rock, the old Venetian fortress headland, is an easy wander along the path. Fira is a short drive south for buses and nightlife. Parking in Imerovigli is tight and taxis are scarce, so book transfers ahead.
What makes it special
Astra Suites has been doing relaxed caldera luxury in Imerovigli since the early 1990s, long enough to build a track record newer openings cannot match. It spreads over seven levels of cliff in the centre of the village, with a clifftop infinity pool and bar, Five Senses restaurant, a small wellness area and private pools or outdoor jetted tubs in the top suite categories. The award shelf is long and the service warm.
