You have almost certainly seen Cavo Tagoo, even if you did not know its name. The cliffside infinity pool at Tagoo, just north of Mykonos Town, faces west over the Old Port and the sunset, with a 40-metre aquarium bar alongside, and it has been one of the island’s signature images for years. The hotel climbs the hillside in white tiers, and its Cave Pool Suites are the rooms people ask for by name. There is a full spa, the Meraki restaurant, and Chora is about a kilometre away.

The experience

Afternoons belong to the pool, with floating sunbeds, double loungers and a bar that keeps going until late, and sunset is the moment the whole hotel seems to turn and face the same way. The spa offers Greek and contemporary treatments, with a sauna, steam room and an indoor pool, and there is a fitness centre next door. Guest reviews are strongly positive, although this is a big, busy hotel in peak season. A shuttle runs to and from town, which helps given the climb. If you want privacy, book a suite with its own pool, as the main pool is very much a social scene.

The rooms

Rooms run from Classic and Premium Rooms through suites to multi-bedroom villas, 15 categories in all. The Cave Pool Suite and its two-bedroom version, along with the Orlinski Cave Pool Villa, are the signature options, each with a private pool. Many superior rooms also come with a private pool. Most rooms sleep two or three, so this is a couples’ hotel at heart. The lifts only reach the third floor, so ask for a lower level if stairs are a problem.

Food and drink

Meraki is the hotel’s restaurant, serving contemporary Greek and Mediterranean food from lunchtime until midnight, with sunset views over the Old Port. Breakfast is a buffet. The pool bar runs from day into night with cocktails and light bites. Zuma, the Japanese restaurant, sits just beyond the hotel if you want a change. Book Meraki for sunset in high season, as the best tables go early.

The neighbourhood

Tagoo is on the coast road just north of Mykonos Town. Chora is about a kilometre away, a walk or a short shuttle ride, and the Old Port bus stop is roughly 700 metres. The new port at Tourlos is about two kilometres north and the airport around five. The nearest beach is a small, unorganised cove about 800 metres away, so for proper beach days head south by taxi.

Cavo Tagoo is one of the images that defines Mykonos: a cliffside infinity pool facing west over the Old Port, with a 40-metre aquarium bar alongside. The Cave Pool Suites, with pools set into rock-like surroundings, are its most distinctive rooms, and there is a full spa with an indoor pool. It is bigger than most boutiques, but few hotels on the island deliver this kind of drama.

Couples and groups celebrating something big who want the famous pool, a cave suite and sunset cocktails. Not for families with young children or guests with limited mobility, and larger than a classic boutique.
