One Aldwych occupies the curved Edwardian building at the intersection of Aldwych and the Strand: in other words, one of the most recognisable addresses in central London. It has remained independently owned since opening in 1998. B Corp certified, with a private art collection displayed throughout all 105 rooms and public spaces, rooftop beehives supplying the kitchen and an 18-metre chlorine-free swimming pool in the basement, it carries its five-star credentials through operational choices rather than just aesthetic ones. Jazz plays in the lobby on weekend mornings. The repeat guest rate is among the highest of any hotel in this part of the city.

The experience

One Aldwych works on a principle of considered independence: independently owned, B Corp certified, with a sustainability programme that extends from the rooftop beehives to the mineral-based pool cleaning system to the supplier relationships behind both restaurants. None of this is shouted about; it accumulates quietly through a stay. The private art collection, which was curated specifically for the hotel rather than sourced generically, gives every room and corridor a specificity that most hotels at this level do not achieve. Service draws exceptional reviews, with staff frequently cited in long-term guest write-ups as the primary reason for returning. The concierge team are noted for being genuinely connected to the neighbourhood rather than reliant on generic recommendations.

The rooms

All 105 rooms and suites are individually designed with contemporary British interiors, hardwood floors, double-glazed windows, well-stocked minibars, premium bedding, bathrobes and slippers, and pieces from One Aldwych’s private art collection. Four Signature Suites have unique features and bespoke touches inspired by their position and views. Rooms overlook the theatre district, the Strand or internal courtyard. The hotel is fully accessible throughout with three rooms designed specifically for wheelchair users and spacious lifts on all floors. Pet-friendly throughout — special welcome gifts for dogs, treatments for cats.

Food and drink

Two restaurants serve modern European and British cuisine, with breakfast from made-to-order options alongside a full English. The bar draws a strong pre- and post-theatre crowd from the surrounding Strand and Covent Garden theatres. Room service runs 24 hours. The hotel’s B Corp credentials mean sourcing is traceable and suppliers are selected for environmental and social criteria. The Charlie and the Chocolate Factory afternoon tea, served in the bar, is a genuine destination offering for families.

The neighbourhood

One Aldwych sits at the junction of the Strand and Aldwych, where Covent Garden, legal London and the Embankment all converge. The Savoy Theatre is directly opposite. The Royal Opera House is five minutes north. Somerset House and the Courtauld Gallery are five minutes east. Waterloo Bridge and the South Bank’s cultural institutions: including the Tate Modern, BFI, National Theatre, are ten minutes on foot across the Thames. Covent Garden Underground is five minutes on the Piccadilly line.

One Aldwych is independently owned and B Corp certified, both rare distinctions for a five-star London hotel at this level. The 18-metre chlorine-free swimming pool in the basement, with its mineral-based cleaning system, is one of the best hotel pools in central London. The building itself: a landmark Edwardian property at the junction of Aldwych and the Strand, commands an entrance that sets expectations the interior consistently meets. Jazz plays in the lobby. The private art collection runs through every room. Rooftop beehives supply the kitchen.
